Origins of the DJ

The two letters DJ put together which is now a common house hold term, used to describe anyone who plays and mixes records at a club, stem from the word ‘disc jockey.’ It was used to describe radio announcers who would introduce and play popular records. These records, also called discs by those in the industry, were jockeyed by the radio announcers, hence the name disc jockey, which was soon shortened to DJs. In today’s music arena there are various types of DJ. It depends on several factors that include the music that is selected, the location and setting of the performance, the preferred medium, the audience, and the development of sound manipulation. Most people today associate the term DJ with Club DJ's who use actual 'discs' and play them to live audiences. Club DJs select and play music in bars, nightclubs, discothèques, at raves, or even in a stadium. Hip hop disc jockeys select and play music using multiple turntables, often to back up one or more MCs, and they may also do turntable scratching to create percussive sounds.

In 1969, American club DJ Francis Grasso popularized beat matching at New York's Sanctuary nightclub. Beat matching is the technique of creating seamless transitions between records with matching beats, or tempos. Grasso also developed slip-cuing, the technique of holding a record still while the turntable is revolving underneath, releasing it at the desired moment to create a sudden transition from the previous record. He is probably the person most people look to as the father of the modern DJ; although there are many others too including Jamaican-born DJ Kool Herc, widely regarded as the "godfather of hip-hop culture," who performed at block parties in the Bronx, New York.

Then there was the HiFi manufacturer ‘Technics’ who brought into production the Sl-1200 turntables in 1974 which are still highly regarded by DJ’s at clubs. In 1975 hip-hop DJ Grand Wizard Theodore invented the scratching technique by accident. In 1979, the Sugar Hill Gang released "Rapper's Delight", the first hip-hop record to become a hit. It was also the first real breakthrough for sampling. The list is endless and includes many people both from the USA and UK, who helped shape and influence the modern DJ scene;  such as DJ Frankie Knuckles, DJ Larry Levan, Jesse Saunders, Kraftwerk, Jimmy Savile,  Jazzy B of Soul II Soul, Sugar Hill Gang, Run DMC, Trax Dance Music Guide and many more.

DJ’s are often about bling and show. They love to be flamboyant and having a photo on canvas of them in action is all too hard to resist. The game is entertainment and missing sounds is part of it. Show biz and celebriticsm also plays a massive role.  Photobirdy.co.uk can produce fabulous quality club photos on canvas and DJ photos on canvas.
